The Irish Gathering of 2013 Clan O'Byrne of Australia returns to celebrate
In 1998 on the occasion of the opening of the newly renovated Wicklow Gaol as a tourist and genelogical centre Val Byrne, Chieftain of Clann O'Byrne made a welcoming presentation to Crioch Branach, the O'Byrne's Country, to President Mary McAleese. This occasion was particularly poignant for Byrnes as many Byrnes, including the famous Billy Byrne of Ballyanus, were incarcerated in the gaol for their part in the 1798 rebellion. Many Byrne descendents from Australia attended as this was the main country for the deportation of rebels by the English authorities. Val Byrne is now working with Wicklow County Council Geneology on the upcoming Irish Worldwide Home Coming Festival in 2013.
