The Sixth and Final Lecture in the O'Byrne History Lecture Series : 'The O'Byrnes to 1660' will take place at 7.30pm in the Bridge Tavern in Wicklow at 7.30pm Tuesday 17th SEPTEMBER. Dr. Emmett O'Byrne will trace the fortunes of the various O'Byrne landowners in the aftermath of the conclusion of the Nine Years War and the establishment of the County of Wicklow in 1606. In particular, he will examine the upheavals caused by the plantation of Wicklow and its effects on the O'Byrnes, as well as the trial of Phelim McFeagh O'Byrne and his sons for the murder of Robert Ponte of Rathdrum in the late 1620s. All these factors fed into the O'Byrnes joining the great rebellion of November 1641 - a decision that ultimately saw them punished severely by the Cromwellian government of Ireland during the early 1650s, leading to execution, dispossession and exile. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
