CLAN O’BYRNE SYMPOSIUM ‘PAST TIMES IN THE BYRNE COUNTRY’, WICKLOW GAOL - 15 NOVEMBER 2014
Clan O’Byrne is pleased to confirm its programme of speakers for its Symposium ‘Past Times in the Byrne Country’ at Wicklow Gaol on Saturday 15 November 2014 between 9am and 1pm.
Registration will begin at 9am, while the first lecture will commence at 9.45am.
Dr. Darren McGettigan (UCD) will speak on ‘Myth & History: The escapes of Red Hugh O’Donnell to Wicklow 1591-92’. Mr. John Nangle (Independent Scholar) will deliver a very interesting presentation on the careers of James Byrne and his sons whose work dating from the 1700s can be seen in graveyards from north of Arklow to Rosslare. Ms Yvonne Whitty (Archaeologist) and Mr. Jack Lynch will present their audio visual presentation on the story of Preban graveyard. This was shown earlier this year in Tinahely where it was very well received. Finally, Dr Christiaan Corlett (OPW) will give a lecture on farm houses in the Byrne Country – drawing upon his research for his recent book on farm houses in Wicklow.
Coffee & tea will served upon arrival and later after 11am.
There will be charge of €10 to attend.
For those interested, the Clan O’Byrne booklet ‘Drives through the O’Byrne’s Country’ is available from Bridge Street Books, Wicklow Town and also from the Woodenbridge Hotel. It will also be available for sale at the symposium on 15 November.

BACK TO OUR PAST RDS DUBLIN 17-19 OCTOBER 2014
Back To Our Past is an annual family history show held at the RDS (Royal Dublin Society) in Dublin, Ireland. The event was first held in 2011 and has now come become a firm fixture in the Irish genealogical calendar. In 2013 BTOP included for the first time genetic genealogy lectures under the umbrella of Genetic Genealogy Ireland (GGI). These lectures were sponsored by the Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) testing company and the International Society of Genetic Genealogy (ISOGG). BTOP will again take place at the RDS 17-19 October 2014, and again with GGI participation. GGI will sponsor lectures on all aspects of genetic genealogy from basic to advanced. Among these talks will be one on the Byrne/Burns/Beirne DNA Project in which its administrator Paul Burns will describe how DNA has identified the many distinct origins of our surnames, how we have used it to determine relationships among members, and what more we can expect to find out during the current wave of advances in DNA research. The GGI’s schedule of lectures has not yet been finalized, so we do not yet know the date of the Byrne lecture. When known we will provide a link to the GGI website and on this site. DNA test kits will be available at the FTDNA/ISOGG booth. Should any reader in Ireland or elsewhere in Europe wish to get a head start, please contact Richard Byrne ([email protected]) who has a supply on hand.
The 2014 DNA Project report has now been added to this site
